Aepyceros melampus is a swift-running antelope that is native to eastern and southern Africa. It is the most abundant ruminant in this region. Impalas are characterized by their long, slender legs and their black-and-white striped coat. They are found in savannas and woodlands and prefer to live in herds of up to 50 individuals. The herd is led by a territorial male, who defends his territory from other males. Impalas are herbivores and eat a variety of plants, including grasses, leaves, and fruit.

They are an important part of the ecosystem and help to control populations of plants and animals. Impalas are currently classified as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. However, they are hunted for meat in some countries.
