Elimisha Outreach

Nanyuki, Laikipia, Friday, 9th June 2023: The Laikipian, a leading advocate for conservation, environmental and climate education, is thrilled to announce the launch of the Elimisha Outreach Project in collaboration with the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Mount Kenya Trust, Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, and TonyWild Foundation. This initiative aims to promote climate change awareness and conservation education among students and schools in Laikipia and Homabay Counties in Kenya.

In recent times, the escalating climate crisis has led to the loss of wildlife, water scarcity, pollution, and other environmental challenges, causing profound transformations in our lives. Many regions in Kenya including Laikipia and Homabay County are not immune to these changes, as they witness a rapid shift in their once thriving conservation landscape, resulting in biodiversity loss and threatening livelihoods.

The Elimisha outreach project takes a proactive approach to address these pressing issues by engaging teachers and students in climate change awareness and practical activities through a creatively designed board game – Nexus Dicey =. By collaborating with our esteemed partners, we are confident that this program will make a significant impact on individuals, schools, and the community at large.

Key project objectives include:

  • Creating awareness and fostering positive attitudes towards climate change impacts among young learners
  • Enhancing awareness of climate change impacts within school localities
  • Encouraging student-led activities to address negative impacts in their immediate environment and communities
  • Establishing a network of young champions dedicated to sustainable practices and conservation

The project will involve various activities, including the development of a board game training manual for teachers, distribution of the climate awareness game and manuals to 100 schools, training of conservation educators, installation of human versions of the game at outreach centres, and collaborative visits to over 100 schools.

We anticipate significant conservation impact, including increased awareness of climate change issues, improved environments in schools and communities, an enhanced appreciation of natural resources, adoption of sustainable practices by schools, and the cultivation of an action-oriented young generation of environmental ambassadors.

By December 2023, The Laikipian aims to distribute 300 copies of the Nexus Dicey board game and teaching manual to over 100 schools, install two human versions of the game at resource centres, and reach out to more than 25,000 school-going children and 100 teachers. Through engaging with the game, students will gain a deeper understanding of climate change impacts and be empowered to take simple yet impactful actions within their communities.

The Laikipian is committed to fostering a culture of environmental stewardship and conservation, and we are excited to embark on this transformative journey with our esteemed partners.
